THE SUMMER LOAFER

Blogging in summer seems kinda pointless sometimes, so Swurdin is a little slower when the weather is up there, sorry. Of course summer also brings mad possibilities to bump out sunny tracks and sweaty mixtapes and talk about your summer attire. See, I’m all for canvas sneakers, espadrilles and easy footwear like my Minnetonka loafers.

I bought ‘em last year from Shoebuy.com because they were rather cheap, but when I unpacked them they didn’t got any soles. Fuck! Good thing the shoemaker hooked me up with some 20 euro soles. Now they’re all comfy and summerish. Get yourselves a pair!

And yeah I have hairy legs, I’m a guy. Fuck you.

TRASH & TREASURES XXL

Trash & Treasures is always massive fun. Sure nothing beats thrifting au natural at a smelly second hand shop or granny infected flea market but T&T is that plus some hipsters, sun and good music. I bought the best sunglasses ever for 9 euro’s and Rotterdam native Tjimme was selling these Jack Purcell sneakers for only 15 euro’s. Not so suave after all!

I don’t have my new Canon S90 or the whole ‘can I take a picture for my blog’ (which is a fucking lame thing to say anyway, need suggestions) thingy on lock yet but still managed to take some pictures. Next time you kinda needs to be there.

FAVELA ON BLAST IS ON BLAST

I had a crazy busy week but found some time to finally watch Diplo’s much talked out Baile Funk docu Favela On Blast as Pitchfork is hosting it for a week. Now the film was already completed in ‘08 it had a little trouble getting properly distributed. The innanet distribution seems like a good move. Nice busy!

So how was it? I loved it. I’m not the biggest fan of Baile Funk but I love where it’s coming from and the story behind it. I love the ’scene’, rawness, the dances, the girls and all out party spirit. Diplo did a great job mapping the different Funk MC’s, DJ’s and soundsystems. It’s a proper introduction of the music without accusing or glorifying it. In a subtle way the controversies surrounding Favela Funk like gang violence, poverty, the suppression of Brazilian women and the brutal way the police operates in the favela’s is highlighted, but in the end it’s about the music.

Sure, the Funk MC’s talk about punnani and AK’s a lot, but Funk is also singing the blues and gettin’ girls to go to see the doctor if they feel an itch down there. In the documentary I just see a lot of young peeps having a great time listening to the music they love, fuck it that it comes with some Surra de Bunda.

I loved the raw cinematography. Although visually miles away from each other it somewhat made me think of David LaChapelle’s documentary Rize. Rize tells the story of Krumping the same way Favela On Blast introduces and celebrates Baile Funk. It must have been not easy making the film, as filming in favela’s means bribing gangs, ducking for shoot outs and always watching your back. Diplo did a great job.

And as somebody that’s always a bit skeptical this proves to me that accusing Wes Pentz of anything near exploitation is straight gibberish. Sure the Major Lazer project touched (read: did not cross) some borders but this movie is made out of love and fascination, but you’ll have to see that for yourself.

I dug up the Favela Funk mixtapes Diplo did a few back. The first one is a fun and accessible introduction into the music, Favela Strikes Back goes a bit deeper. Good listens. Enjoy!

BREAD, BUTTER, BERLIN, PICTURES

Swurdinberlin01

Some pictures from Berlin. We kinda forgot to take pictures of the trade show itself or everything that happened after the day we touched down on Berliner soil. Sorry! But day eins we documented kinda well so here is a little report. Thanks to Joey for the invite and a shout out to everybody I met thurr and was around.

Swurdinberlin03

This is what Joey looks like while working (the girl is his partner in crime, kinda furgut your name sweet, sorry). Pretty notch right? The area is the ‘Playground Area’ where we kinda basically sorta hung around. Mayer Hawthorne (very nice) and beautiful petite Janelle Monae (kinda nice but zero interaction with her audience) performed and there was a pool. Like!

So this geezer decided it was time for a ’signature outfit’, what meant he was rocking one of his fifteen pieced collection of fine grey shirts for three fucking days. I sorta guess it was a statement against the fast pace commercial fashionista world he was in and wanted so desperately rage against. You fight your fight young trooper!

Swurdinberlin08

I’m a sinner and will go straight to hell. Normally I don’t really do pork meat but Currywurst is so fuckin disgusting that’s it’s very satisfying to eat at the same time. Yes all the red is curry, under the curry is the wurst.

BBB party equals free BBQ & booze & party & bullshit & the police turning up to shut it down & nobody giving a shit about the police turning up and shutting it down & continuing the party & at least 50 peeps from Amsterdam dancing to a Flexican Beat & more bullshit. I loved it.

D. CARTER – THE MANY SHADES OF CAJUAL

BE034485

So I recently shared this bangin’ Derrick Carter tape with all and all of y’all and started to educate oneself little by little on some other house music than Bmore club. I came across another one of his tapes that I got on repeat ever since. At some website someone said this ‘best of Cajual records‘ tape kinda bridges the gap between the old Chicago sounds and the newskool.

For me it’s just some nice music to play out while working doing what I love to do. It’s time for the perculator!

JOEY ELGERSMA ON LIFE & BBB

You might know Joey for dominating the background images of hundreds of 15 y/o girls on Hyves with pictures of his flamboyant Clubkids (rip) or as that guy never spotted without a flock of hotties. I know him as one of the nicest, most honest and hard working peeps around. Stylist, head of ‘gettin in’ and super connector Joey Elgersma on life, moving to Berlin and working for Bread & Butter.

Heej Joey, how are you? Hows life in Berlin?
“Life is butter in Berlin. I’m a very happy man. Extremely hectic for now just before my first show, which is going to be huge. I’m excited as Roger Rabbit on speed. Good to have you around this week.”

Nice! So how does one go from Clubkids to BBB within a 2 year time span?
“When the Amsterdam Clubkids were on their peak of happiness, tons of brands and magazines wanted to have an involvement. All of them came together at BBB. Each show we were working for a different brand, The BBB team always felt like a family. When i closed down the Clubkids project, suddenly Vans was there. I love the brand with all my heart but the big challenge was missing. Then BBB called and 3 months I was officially part of the family.”

What you think is your main strength when it comes to doing what you do?
“I dont know. I think you should ask the people I work(ed) with. But I don’t separate my private life with work. Its one. I’m always honest & just get my shit done. Jeff Staple tweeted last week: Pick a job you love and you never work a day in your life. That was on-point.”

Picture 5

So can you tell us something about the BBB tradeshow?
“I expect people to enjoy and have a nice experience in Sport & Street. Especially now that we are launching two new areas. The Boarding House (BBBH) is the new art house on the first floor, where we combine artists, collectors & smaller brands. The Playground (BBPG) is the outside space. A nice intimate park with a music stage, basketball court, skate obstacles, swimming pool, fleamarket, BBQ & special brand presentations.”

I’m kinda not there for business, sorry... What else is there to do?
“Just a few points: Taka Hayashi’s first exhibition in Europe, The Flexican, Jaziah and Cream music meeting the Paris based Pigalle boys at our blockparty at Hedi, all the traditional manufacturing and heritage brands, Swurdin doing good business and a lot of things to blog about.”

“It will be a sexy week, enjoy!”

DRESSED UP CAMOUFLAGE

After the still growing popularity of the plain army jacket the fashion people are now ready to take their battlefield attire to another level it seems. The camoprint is making a definite comeback into menswear this summer, as seen on everything from backpacks to button-downs lately.

And this is not just about the often ill-fitting and generic army dumpstore gear either, it’s time to put the suave into soldier. This is where I like this look the most, pulling this off right means mixing it with the more classy and dressed up items to avoid looking like some Inglorious Basterd running the streets.

Hand in hand with the rise of camo comes that whole shorts mixed with blazers thingy, not really feeling that. Just as I’m not sure about Jake Davis’ take on the camo subject, what’s your thought? I do like the allover camo jacket which might just be a little too much for my taste. At the same time a nice pair of fitted camo pants are moving up on my wishlist big time.

‘PAUPERHOUSE’ X DOWN SOUTH MIXTAPE

bride_of_frankenstein

In ‘08 Wiz Khalifa was one of the first to burst his raps over a ravebeat. Little did he know sampling eurohouse, techno and minimal music would turn into an interesting development in hiphop turning into more bad meaning good music. Now that goes very wrong if Tiesto fucks with it, if Dipset does it turns into something of proportion.

Bird Peterson that I really only know for some electro/housish remixes fucks with the genre and underlined some down south acapella’s wiv samples and melodies coming from eurohouse and music they play at Sensation. Really reminds me of that Paper Route Gangstaz record Diplo put out a year or some ago, which is a good thing. Pop some X while gettin’ your swerve on. Paul van Dyck goes Slim Thugga. Big listen!

MELO-X DROPS A FREE ALBUM

Picture 2

“No singles, No release date, No Trailers, No Leaks, No Track Listings Preview, No Promo…. Just Music.”

Fuck yuh. That’s how you release music. Fuck an advertising-, marketing- or hype-scheme. Good music sells itself. Melo-X sort of really gets it if you’d ask me. His new – free – album is never a game changer but definitely worth your attention. Quality sounds and rhymes with a Spike Leeish vibe to it. Stand out track is Rapity Rap if you’d ask me, putting the internet on blast over an interesting beat. Download and stream:
