The good folks behind denim dreamland Tenue de Nîmes are spreading their wings, adding a second must-visit shop to the scene of Amsterdam’s menswear. This time taking their passionate approach we knew they had for jeans to that other product that only gets better with age: Red Wing working boots.

Being the first Red Wing store in the Netherlands means this is the place you wanna go for the widest selection in boots and shoes. Following the story behind the boots – nicely explained in this video – everything in the store also has a story to tell. The glass boxes displaying the shoes are filled with coals normally used to fire up powerplants, one in many entertaining details found troughout the store.

Besides footwear the shop boasts a great choice in accessoires, ranging from bags to socks, from ties to pens, all blending in really well with the look and feel of the Red Wing brand. Brands include Duluth Pack, Heritage Leather Company, Tanner Goods and Fisher Space Pens.

I watched The Road. First reaction: WTF. Second reaction: Why did nobody tell me?

Now I’m a big big fan of the dystopian flick. Nothing beats watching civilization going down the drain while people develop an open mind to cannibalism. Nothing beats some brave souls wandering through deserted grey landscapes, scavenging for food and always watching there back for zombie attacks, robbers or mutated whatevers.

The Book Of Eli – the other post-apocalyptic-walking-somewhere – flick that hit theaters this year did not anywhere come near the story, screenplay and onscreen art of The Road. Sure it was cool watching Denzel Washington gettig’ his black ninja Mad Max spaghetti western awesomeness on, The Road struck me with a realistic, harsh and grimy view on the world as I have never seen before.

The dark skies, colorless fields and facial contours really showed the impact of the apocalyptic event and are just beautiful. Together with some good acting and a horrifying story of a father raising his son in this hell on earth it left me with an empty feeling and an overall FUCK without some gimmicky M. Night Slamalala kinda plot twist to get struck by.

I have to admit the survival techniques, outdoor lifestyle and workwear kinda made me love this on an extra level. Hahaha. It’s kinda not that expensive on Play but a torrent will also do just fine. Did anyone read the novel?

Nasty old men hitting on under aged hot girls, a pretty hipster thing to do right? Guys like Dov, Olivier and Terry got their pervert game down to a trademark, getting young pussy on the regular. Yet there is one man who puts all these guys to shame, the true pioneer of dirty old fuckers, the awesome French singer Serge Gainsbourg. “Serge liked to surround himself with beautiful women. He was insecure about his looks and felt validated by their attentions”. Here’s some examples of him being a total pervert:

Gainsbourg, also a noted director, on set of the disturbing ‘Je t’aime, moi non plus’. Not the film but the soundtrack is perhaps Serge’s most famous work. Originally written for his then girlfriend Brigitte Bardot he went up recording it with his later -18 years younger- girl Jane Birkin. Rumour has it that she’s having a real orgasm at the end of the song, the reason it got banned by most radiostations.

With the same Jane Birkin he recorded the wonderful concept album ‘Histoire de Melody Nelson’. It tells the twisted story of Serge hitting a teenage girl with his Rolls Royce, seducing her and making her lose her virginity before she dies in a planecrash. Fortunately it’s also an excellent piece of music you’ll love if you are into music by guys like Air or just need a good lovemaking soundtrack. “His casual style and sound is just pimp” as Nas puts it.

Gainsbourg also wrote songs for very naive girls to sing: “Les Sucettes was, on the surface, a pleasant children’s song about a girl who likes aniseed-flavoured lollipops. But Gainsbourg’s lyric was full of playful double meanings referring to oral sex, which Gall, aged 18, simply did not understand. She was filmed singing “Les Sucettes” for television programs, with actions and props playing on the sexual references. By Gall’s account she did not realize until later why the filming attracted so many visitors to the set.”

If you’re still not convinced, he also celebrated incest with his daughter in one of his songs, maybe a little too much. Hahaha.

Now the mash-up isn’t exactly the most respected genre out there. Anyone can pitch the BPM and put an a capella over an instrumental right? Yes, everyone can, but not everyone does it like a Girl Talk, Diplo or Hood Internet does. It’s all about what a capella you put on what beat.

A good mash-up is something magical. Plus it really illustrates the powers of the world wide web (watch this documentary). It’s not all about creating new content no more, it’s all about remixing, mashing and copy-pasting other shit to make something new. But I guess you already knew that.

Photoshopping a Google Searched image onto a t-shirt doesn’t make you a designer the same way having a logo doesn’t make you a brand. I guess streetwear fucked itself over at the point mad peeps where taking themselves mad serious. I lost interest in a lot of brands when they shifted from ‘cool shirts’ to flannels, more flannels and fugly hoodies.

On the other hand I kinda miss the huge amount of Kate Moss, Michael Jordan and ‘funny phrase with the words hood and kicks in it’ shirts to choose from. Like our new favorite blogger Gary Warnett said: “Bring back the print tee.” Do it! But keep it fun and non-pretentious, we don’t need non of that pseudo exquisite shit on our chests. I like this fun song, I really like this playful video, I really really like the vintage bathing suits the girls are wearing and I absolutely love the seersucker suit Hawthorne is wearing.

Those of you born a few years earlier were a little less fortunate on the technological side but in return got the true square Sony awesomeness that is the Walkman. Back to basics playing your carefully recorded mixtapes, and then reeeeewind.

It really is the godfather of personal stereo, that to my surprise was developed nearly by accident. ”Youngster can not go without music.” This and more is explained in this nice little half-hour video that goes over the various aspects that make up the success of the Walkman. Interesting how the ideas behind the design, the ‘must-have factor’ and the Walkman being a ‘lifestyle product’ still reflect in today’s products. It goes to show Sony really understood the background of their customers, having got a Walkman to suit every lifestyle.
